Back to School

The district has created this helpful FAQ document to help parents navigate the changes in district protocols and procedures for 2020-21. This document contains information on changes in building, student health, and parent procedures.

Building Procedures:

Q: Where can I find my school’s supply list?
A: Click on this link to view the school supply list for each building.

Q: The supply list has a water bottle on it for this year. Are there any restrictions?
A: We ask all families to provide a see-through water bottle for their child. Colored bottles will be permissible. Opaque or metal bottles will not be permissible.

Q: The supply list has a cloth mask on it. Are other face coverings permissible?
A: At this time, the district is permitting the use of any face covering, provided it is not offensive, inappropriate, insensitive, or in violation of the district’s Policy 5511 on Student Dress and Grooming. Any face covering meeting these criteria will be confiscated. Those students will be provided with a mask by the school. 
NOTE: These guidelines may change if additional restrictions are enacted by state or local health officials.

Q: What is the district’s procedure for masks at school?
A: The district released this statement with amended mask procedures after an executive order by Governor Eric Holcomb.

Q: How will my building’s carline work? What time can my student come into the building?
A: Please visit this link to see maps and explainers of carline procedures at all six CSCSHC buildings.

Q: How does the shuttle bus process work for students in grades 5-12?
A:In the morning, all 5-12 students will be bused to the parking lot at NPE. At that time, all students will dismiss from buses and board specific buses to their final destination. CSCSHC staff will be on hand to help direct students where to go. After dismissal from NPE, buses will take students to their appropriate school.

In the afternoon, NPJH and NPHS students will be shuttled to NPI. Upon arrival, those students will dismiss from their shuttle bus and board their homebound bus. This process will be completed prior to the afternoon bell at NPI. Once the NPI bell rings, those students will exit the building and immediately board their homebound bus. Please review your child’s bus number with them prior to the first day. 

Parent Procedures:

Q: What are the procedures for parents to come to a school building?
A: Parents and all other visitors will only be permitted into a school building by appointment only due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please call your school before coming. If you arrive at a school building without an appointment, you may be denied entrance.

Upon arrival, all visitors will remain in the building’s front office area. Visitors will not be permitted into classrooms, cafeterias, or any other parts of the building.

Q: What time will my student’s bus be at our house?
A: Log on to the district’s bus routing program at this link. Enter your address to see what time the bus comes to your house in the morning and afternoon. If you have any busing issues, please contact Transportation Director Bob Martin at rmartin@newpal.k12.in.us.

Student Health Procedures:

Q: The district’s blueprint plan says parents should complete a health screening for students each day before school. How do I do the screening? What should I be looking for?
A: Every morning prior to school you should check your child’s temperature. If your child has any one of the following symptoms, they should stay home.

Please call your school to notify them of any potential symptoms.

Q: When should I keep my student home?
A: In addition to the health screening above, please also keep your child home if they have been in close contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. Close contact is defined as being within a distance of six feet for more than 15 minutes. If anyone in your house has tested positive for COVID-19, your child should be quarantined and not attend school.

Q: If I do keep my student home because of symptoms, what does my school need to know?
A: Please call the school nurse to let them know your child’s symptoms. Your school nurse will provide instructions on how you should proceed.

Q: What will happen if my student becomes ill at school with COVID-19 symptoms? 
A: Your child will be assessed by the school nurse and placed in a designated isolation room with a video monitor. The nurse will call you to pick up your child immediately. You will be provided with information about potential next steps for your family. Please make sure there is accurate contact information for you and any other parents/guardians in your student’s PowerSchool profile. It will be critical for us to reach you if your child is ill at school.

Q: When can my student come back to school after being sent home with symptoms?
A: Your child will be excluded from school for at least 10 days. After 10 days have passed, your child must be fever, vomiting, diarrhea free without the use of medication for 72 hours before returning to school. 

If your child’s physician provides a letter stating the symptoms are from an alternate diagnosis, your child can return to school after 72 hours from being sent home, presuming your child has not had a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea for 72 hours.

Q: If my student is sent home from school with COVID-19 symptoms, should I get them tested? How long should I wait? 
A: The Indiana State Department of Health strongly encourages testing. The school will encourage you to have this conversation with your primary care physician.

The Indiana State Department of Health recommends waiting five days from the date of exposure before taking a COVID-19 test. 

Please note that if your child gets a negative test and no alternate diagnosis is given, they will still be excluded from school for the 10 days + 72 hours with no fever, vomiting, or diarrhea without the use of medication.

Q: What will happen if my student is in contact with a student who tests positive for COVID-19? WIll be I notified?
A: If your child is a close contact (within six feet for a time period greater than 15 minutes) you will be contacted by the health department’s contact tracers. You may receive a phone call, text, or both.

Q: My child has allergies or other pre-existing health condition. Should I provide a letter stating this so my child doesn’t get sent home?
A: The district cannot accept blanket statements for allergies, migraines, chronic runny nose, or other preexisting conditions. If your child comes to the clinic with any one of the symptoms listed, they will be sent home. These guidelines are from the Indiana State Department of Health. If after being sent home, your primary care physician can provide a note confirming the cause of these symptoms is not from COVID-19, your child may return to school. If the child is displaying fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, they must be symptom free for 72 hours before returning to school.

While your child may have a pre-existing condition that displays similar symptoms to COVID-19, there is no way for us to know if their symptom is because of their known condition or COVID-19. In addition, your child could be unknowingly carrying and spreading the virus. The district, under the guidance of state health officials, will always act in an abundance of caution to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
